An Old Person's Guide to Writing Async Jobs with GCP

November 9, 2017

It's clear to me that what the world needs right now, this very minute, is a middle-aged moron telling folks how to build microservices in 2017.

Sandwich of the Month

- Rocchetta cheese. A delicious fresh cheese made from the combined milks of cows, sheep, and goats. Wrap it in paper (not plastic) if you need to store it.

- Fig jam. The brand I'm eating is called Vergers d'Aliénor. In Swedish it's fikonmarmelad, which is fun to say. I haven't had a fresh fig since leaving California, but this jam is a decent proxy.

- Knäckebröd (crispbread), preferably a brungräddat (brown) like Leksands Rundrut. Pyramid Spisbrod will do in a pinch. Use matzah if desperate, leaving slavery, or re-enacting same.

Directions: Spread cheese on crispbread. Spread fig jam on top of cheese.

Eat. Relish the union of the earthiness of the brown knäckebröd, the richness of the teats of  3 mammals and the sweetness and punch of the fig jam. Realize that nothing may ever be this good again, ever.

In Sweden: Money without Cash
In Sweden: Money without Cash

I haven’t bought anything with cash in Sweden in well over a year. I’ve barely even touched cash since I got the kids bank accounts so I could pay their allowances from my phone. I’ve been holding the same lonely 20kr bill in wallet for month and months, which is sort of a shame because it’s really pretty and it has a picture of Pippi Longstocking on it, I kid you not.

Odes to Sweden, Part I: Youth Sports

In just a few weeks my family and I will be leaving Sweden and returning to the US. People here sometimes mock Americans for overusing the word ‘amazing’, so let me be clear that the experience of living here has been amazing. Really. Thank you all for sharing yourselves and your wonderful country with us for 18 months.

Winter Biking Part III: Gloves
Winter Biking Part III: Gloves

My hands get cold. With the weather in Sweden being, well, cold, I was wearing gloves every day starting in September, and was in full cold-weather-gear-mode by November.

If you're trying to keep your hands warm on handlebars, maybe I can help.

If Admiral Peary could make it from Brooklyn to the North Pole, surely I can figure out how to ride my bike around this town all winter even if it's a little cold.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

It's a great corn maze.

I don't envy Peter Eisenman, the designer of this monument. Here's 25 million Euros and 5 acres in the center of Berlin. Six million people died. Give them the memorial they deserve. Don't fuck it up.

Of course the art that the USSR left in Berlin to remind the Germans that they got their asses kicked in the Great War reflected Soviet racial and ethnic nonsense.
